Hi All,
Before I reported this as a bug I thought it would be sensible to check for a known issue here first. Looking throught the forum I have come across 1 other entry that seemed similar but I'm pretty sure this is not down to the graphics....
I have a two PC wired network (100Mbps) I have measured the response times when pinging as <1ms
PC 'A' is a quad opteron ATI PCI-E 256MB and 2GB System RAM running WinXP Pro (leagal all patched updated applied) all seems well with this end.
PC 'B' is a DELL P4 2.8GHz with an OEM GForce MX440 with 128MB Dedicated graphics Ram and 1GB system Ram running Kubuntu 9.04 32bit - AlienArena plays perfectly in single player mode (installed from "add software").
Naturally, i set the quad opteron as the host machine and all seems well
I go the linux machine and select join game, and can see the host in the menu.
now here's the BUTS!!
The ping is off the scale! 5000+ yet when i try to verify this with the ping command in the terminal i get <1ms?
Thinking "what the hell!" I tried to join the game... Server responds and seems to download map files via UDP then HTTP.... looks like it is about to load saying "loading Map" - the bar sweeps accross as normal... then promptly closes the game with no message or other noticable after effect.
Am I missing something here - or is this a genuine bug?
If you require debug or file info no probs, just tell me how to get hold of it!!
Many thanks for any help you can offer

Out of curiosity, what version number of Alien Arena is running on the Kubuntu machine? My understanding is, the version that the debian-based linux distros have available is waaay out of date.
Different versions of AA are generally compatible if the version numbers aren't too far apart, but once you go back far enough some strange things happen when you combine them.
If you're running the same versions, you should have the same maps, and shouldn't be downloading them from UDP or HTTP - they should already be on your machine.

Thanks for the heads up on that one!! - I just assumed that the ones in the downloads section were current.
As a test i tried it the other way around - the linux machine hosting and the windows as the slave - worked first time and all worked well, we were gaming for a few hours until the linux machine started getting "stuck" keys. The effect was the character permently side-stepping?
A reboot fixed this and the KB was fine in the rest of the apps?
would an "apt-get update" get the current (or close enough) version on kubuntu?
another thing i noticed after posting was that when the windows machine was hosting two instances of the server appeared in the server list on the linux machine but only one when linux was doing the hosting as i belive it should be?
thanks for taking the time to reply, i will look into this and get back with the results - it's now 5:05am here! - time flies when your having fun!!

There are two main ways to go about getting the current release on Linux. The first (and arguably easiest) is to grab the game files from the downloads page on the Alien Arena home site, HERE. There are several mirror links there for you to choose from.
If you're slightly more adventurous, you can download the game files via SVN. This gives you the absolutely latest code developments - kind of like beta testing. You update via SVN and compile the code on your system. There are a few posts on the forums here that talk about how to do this, kind of scattered around a bit. You can also find some help on the alienarena wiki HERE.

Yeah, your ubuntu box is using version 7.00, from early-mid 2008. Ubuntu is based on Debian and sycs with it each release (6 month intervals,) and Debain hasn't had a "sponsor" for that package for ages. Current version is 7.32 from just a couple weeks ago.
I say go with SVN. Takes up a bit more space, but you can update very easily by running "SVN update" and recompiling. No need to download the entire thing again for a new version; just whatever has changed. And it's cool to update, compile, and see some neat new feature!
